Italian Renaissance red silk embroidery over linen in the shape of a textile border / band / valance. It is done in a traditional technique where the background is embroidered with red silk over drawn thread and the figures are left un-embroidered, in the natural linen color. Its depicts a hunt scene, a complex yet harmonious composition of symmetrically arranged pairs of hunters / men blowing horns and carrying spears; a variety of mythical creatures, animals and birds; and large fire pits; all surrounded by embroidered borders. The fact that the subject is secular, rather than religious, dates it circa 17th Century. We have seen similar textiles in major museums such as the Victoria & Albert, Hermitage and Metropolitan. What makes this piece even more remarkable is that it is complete, with borders on all four sides, not a fragment. In very good used condition with small losses and imperfections consistent with age as shown. Un-examined out of frame. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
