Fine antique Georgian period large knife / cutlery box with a hinged sloping lid. It is made out of a lovely richly veneered wood, most likely Mahogany or Rosewood, and has the elegance and simplicity of an early piece. It is decorated with a central, oval inlaid satinwood conch shell motif, inlaid borders surrounding the lid as well as vertical inlays enhancing the front of the box. The interior has a center star inlay on the top, compartments below outlined with stringing, a type of veneer which alternates light and dark color woods, and a key hole brass lock escutcheon. In remarkably good condition considering its age and use, with minor veneer losses, lid ring absent, old repair to lid back corner and small dents left by knives to interior lid as shown.
