Christofle French silver plated wine basket / caddy. This type of basketry work is known as vannerie. It is marked on the underside Christofle France Collection Gallia. Christofle's origins date to 1830 when Charles Christofle took over the management of his parent's small Paris jewelry shop. In 1842 Charles obtained the French rights to electroplating from Elkington. The firm employed only the most talented workmen, designers and sculptors. Charles promoted the firm participating in international exhibitions where Christofle was always distinguished. This resulted in commissions from Emperor Napoleon III of France, among other royalty, and the aristocracy soon followed. After five generations, Christofle is still family owned and operated, and remains the purveyor of elegant design and superior quality tableware worldwide. In very good used condition as shown.
