Antique hand colored bird engraving Le Rolle de Madagascar from "Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux" first published in Paris by Martinet, Buffon and associates between 1770 and 1786.

François Nicolas MARTINET (1725-1804) was a French court engraver and naturalist, specialized in ornithology. Georges-Louis Leclerc, count de Buffon, ( 1707–1788) was a French naturalist, best known for his 36 volume Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière (1749–1788) which included eight tomes devoted to birds.

It comes matted and framed, ready to display. In good used condition with light toning and foxing; gilt losses to frame, glue and paper residue to margins concealed by mat. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.

Measurements: Frame: 17 3/4" by 14 3/4"; Mat opening: 9 3/4" by 8 1/4"; Image size 8 11/16" by 6 7/8" approximately.
