Pair of beautiful antique 18th Century old master gouache painting on paper landscape with figures. Both show panoramic views with blue skies, clouds, a river or lake with rocks and waterfalls, a country road, a large tree and peasant figures on horseback. On one the horse ridden by a woman is coming towards the viewer and on the other we see the back of the horse, ridden by a man, moving away from us towards a castle. It could well be that both watercolors depict the same location seen from opposite sides. The one with the castle is signed in white J. Burgi. Johann Jakob Bürgi was born in Waldshut (October 17, 1737 was his date of baptism) and died March 29, 1795 in Mainz). He was active in 18th Century Switzerland as a painter and art publisher. Waldshut is now part of Germany (at the Swiss border), but at the time of his birth it was known as Vorderösterreich, the name given to the possessions of the house of Hapsburg in the region. In very good condition, finely framed and ready to display as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
Measurements: Visible Image 8.25" by 6.25" approximately.
