Antique Canvaswork / Needlework Picture Pastoral Group Framed - c. 19th CenturyAntique Canvaswork / Needlework Picture Pastoral Group Framed - c. 19th Century

Charming antique canvas work / needlework / woolwork picture of a pastoral scene depicting a family group sitting under a tree. Apparently they are preparing to spend the night as there is a lit bonfire. A loaded donkey stands on the left while a young man appears to be cutting a branch of a tree.

In 18th and early 19th Century America, young girls where expected to complete at least two embroidered pieces. The first one, done around the age of five or six, was called a marking sampler and served the dual purpose of teaching the alphabet and numbers as well as basic embroidery techniques. Girls who were fortunate enough to be able to continue their education usually made a second embroidery in their adolescent years. This could be a more decorative pictorial sampler or a needlework picture. Although less utilitarian than marking samplers, needlework pictures also served an important purpose. The completed work was usually framed and displayed prominently as evidence of the young lady's patience and skill as well as her parents position and refinement. In very good used condition with toning and minor signs of wear to wood frame as shown. Unexamined outside of frame, photo taken through glass which explains reflections. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
