Large needlework sampler embroidered with silk threads on a loosely woven linen. It depicts flowering vines issuing from two tall, diamond shaped urns surrounding a child's prayer "A child's humble confession and prayer". This devotion is numbered 20 in the 1820 edition of "Publications of the New England Tract Society, Volume 2, Andover, Massachusetts". The New England Tract Society, established in 1814 in Andover, Massachusetts, distributed non-sectarian Christian books and pamphlets to the American public. The sampler has an embroidered saw tooth border on all four sides.
Confession and Prayer
A Sinner, Lord, Behold I stand In thought, and word, and deed But Jesus sits at thy right hand, For such to intercede.
From early infancy I know, A rebel I have been And daily, as I older grow, I fear I grow in sin.
To heaven can reach the softest word, A child's repenting prayer; For tears are seen, and sighs are heard, And thoughts regarded there.
Then let me all my sins confess, And pardoning grace implore, That I may learn thy righteousness, And love my Saviour more.
Ann Casson 1833
We've found records for this name in the 1860 Census stating a Baltimore, Maryland residence and 1821 birth date. If this is indeed the same person, she would have been about 12 years of age when she made the sampler.
The Casson surname originates from the French family name De Cassagne originally from Bearne, France. It was introduced to England in the 11th Century by the Norman invasion led by William the Conqueror. The Casson name reached the United States in the 1600's with early settlers by that name who established themselves in Virginia and Maryland. The sampler is hand-stitched to a fabric-covered board and is ready to display in a lovely, antique wood frame with traditional, hand-made, splined joinery. In very good used condition with toning and minor imperfections as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
Measurements: Frame: 23 5/8" by 20 1/4"; Visible Image: 17 3/4" by 14 1/4" approximately.
