Filippo Morghen (1730-1777), after Camillo Paderni (1720-1770) pair of classical hand colored, copper engravings of a dancing maenad with drums, from Pompeii Villa of Cicero (Menade danzante con tamburella, da Pompei Villa di Cicerone). Text bellow the images reads as follows: Camillo Paderni delin: Filipo Morghen fcol. Camillo Paderni (1720-1770) was an Italian court painter appointed conservator of the antiquities from the excavations at Herculaneum and Pompei. Charles III (1716–88), King of Spain (1759–88) and of Naples and Sicily commissioned a series of artists, among the most notable Paderni and Morghen, to illustrate the art works found in the Ercolano, Pompeii and surrounding excavations. The illustrations were compiled in eight volumes (the original plan was to make forty!), five of paintings, two dedicated to bronzes and one to lamps and candelabra. The books took decades to complete as the excavations progressed slowly due to the hardness of the lava stone, difficult and dangerous access as well as continued eruptions. Engravings come in newer gilt beaded frames, are cropped close to the border, pasted on board, and hand painted. In good used condition with toning, and imperfections to frames as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.

Measurements: Frame: 15" by 12 3/8" by 1.25" (38 cm by 31.4 cm by 3.2 cm); Visible Image: 11 1/8" by 8 3/8" (28.5 cm by 21.3) approximately.
