Gracefully proportioned English Arts & Crafts style ladder back arm chair, apparently oak, with low rush seat, five wavy back slats, and simple, un-decorated stretchers and legs. The arms are curved as well as the unusual square rear uprights. Fine, hard wood ladder back chairs were typically found in the provincial homes of English country gentry. We have seen similar chairs of refined, simple design described as Clissett style. Philip Clissett (1817-1913) was an English country gentleman chair maker who greatly influenced the English Arts and Crafts Movement through various designers and architects including James McLaren, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Ernest Gimson among others. In very good used condition with lovely age patina to wood, wear to rush seat and imperfections as shown. Shipped professionally packed, fully insured with tracking number. Please provide zip code for shipping estimate to your location. Delivery or pickup can be arranged locally.
