This is a long domed Bakelite brooch. Tested positive with Simichrome. It has a deeply carved abstract design in a butterscotch coloring. The closure is a C clasp with a slight bend and wiggle to the hinge but works fine. There is also a very slight bend to the pin stem. The fittings are silver tone. Dates to the 1930's. Size is 7/8 inch in width by 3 1/4 inches in length and a height of 3/8 in an inch. This brooch is in very good condition.
Bakelite, the 1st entirely synthetic plastic, was developed by Leo Baekeland, a Belgian chemist in 1909. By the 1950's a large variety of plastics appeared and Bakelite was edged out.
