We tested this beautiful piece of solid silver and it shows a very high silver content, at least 90%. However based on the number of hallmarks and age, we don't think it is sterling, but rather a first grade continental or coin silver. It is beautifully cast and tooled with elaborate scenes of putti, birds, flowers and cherubim, and what we presume the wind blowing forth from turbulent clouds. This is a very heavy piece, weighing 120.85 grams or 4.2 ounces! Mid to late 19th century, we lean toward an earlier date c1860. Based on the design and appearance, we think it is Italian, however that is in no way a certainty. An excellent, and usable piece of antique silver! Perfect for a formal table setting, and an equally great display piece. Measures 9 inches long (22.9cm).
