Here's a neat older snuff bottle, circa 1900-1940, early republic period, in the form a a carved calabash or gourd, with gourd vines, blooms and gourds carved on the surface! Carved from four layers of glass. Calabash on calabash, very auspicious! The symbolism of gourds in China is multifaceted, but a simple way to state it would be happiness and high social status. Thus gourds are carved from many precious materials, worn as jewelry, and sculpted in porcelain and glass. The top is pink agate, the collar ebonized wood, and spoon is bone, which you can see is pitted and porous as only bone is (we've provided a detailed picture of the bone spoon). Measures 6.25 cm tall (2.5 inches to stopper top) and is free of issues, but as it is hand carved, it does lean a little in one direction depending on how you display it (turned properly it is arrow straight, so no worries). An excellent old snuff bottle from our extensive collection, ready to be part of yours!
