I'm always on the lookout for a good old toby mug. I can't really help that I like them; you might as well ask me why the wind blows this way or that. I saw this one at a very large antique fair, and argued that because it wasn't marked, it wasn't special (I lied). We researched it and found it to be made in Austria by Altrohla. This one defies description, and is finished with amazing detail and gold gilding. Really detailed facial features, see pictures. I was told it hailed from France, and it does kind of have that look. But...it is the only one I have ever seen like it and research yielded little on it for months. He looks somewhat demented, perhaps he's well "in his cups". Maybe one day we'll know even more, but in the mean time, he's a good old toby that will arouse curiosity wherever he lands. Measures about 6 inches (15cm) tall and aside from slight wear to the gilding, he's perfect. Circa 1900. Bizarre!
