Designed by Leslie Harradine, this figure was in production from 1932 to 1983. Why is this one special? Its the old series made from 1922 to 1932, made of fine bone china and much more expressive and better quality than the later clay types. There were 25 figures in all, each based on a Dickens character. Sairey Gamp wasn't an admirable one, she was a drunken midwife nurse who was scarcely effective at tending the infirm. She was representative of the poor health care skills of the era. This example is in perfect condition - these older ones are hard to find. The Doulton England backstamp on the bottom tells you it's an early one.
Most of these figures were first introduced in 1922, and were retired in the early 1980s. The oldest are marked Doulton England. They were made in several size and material variations over the years. Newer versions have various other backstamps.
