The Artful Dodger is the cunning pickpocket character in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. One of twenty five miniature Dickens characters made by Royal Doulton, he looks like he's surveying the crowd for a potential victim. Released from 1932 to 1983, this is one of the later series made sometime between 1949 and 1958, because he is made of bone china and so stamped. He's been out of production for 35 years, and this one is at least 60 years old! Designed by Leslie Harradine. He measures 4 1/4 inches tall and is in perfect condition.
Most of these figures were first introduced in 1922, and were retired in the early 1980s. The oldest are marked Doulton England. They were made in several size and material variations over the years. Newer versions have various other backstamps.
