An early and rare "no base" or non-step type Toby figure of a gentleman seated with a pipe. D'Orsay type hat and general features of this Toby date it to about the 1820s. Other than pitting from the old kilns in the glaze, he is in remarkable condition, with wear to the top of his hat and a bit of wear on his shoes being about the only noticeable signs of age. There is some extremely minor crazing present as well, but for about 200 years old, he is quite remarkable. Incised 5147 mark on the base. About 5 1/2 inches tall. It's not unusual for early Tobys to see 400 dollars plus at auction.
