This is a good sized pair of masterfully carved boxwood Foo Dogs, Foo Lions, or Shishi, each measuring about 7 inches (17.5 cm) tall. They have green glass rhinestone eyes! Republic period would be about the correct time that they were made, early 20th century. These Foo Dogs are loaded with detail and expression. Nothing coming close to this quality is made today. One of them has the original old paper label on the bottom. We believe they are Chinese, but they have some similarities as well to the Japanese style Foo Lion carvings. Matched male and female pair, the female restraining a playful pup, and the male with the world under his paw. These were used to ward off evil spirits or bad luck from your home or business, and still today adorn palaces, government offices and businesses in Asian countries around the world. They make a great decorative statement and are wonderful conversation pieces - and a little protection never hurt anyone!
