Most peacock blue figures that you will see will involve birds or other animals. Rarely you'll see one like this little elder, or a Buddha or other spiritual figure. The little gentleman here is a provincial figure, leaning against a bundle of sticks or a trap, perhaps even a fishing trap. It's hard to say, but he's taking a break from the daily grind to smoke his pipe! The delicate little pipe is intact, and he's free of any damage, though we should note kiln roughness on the bottom that is common to all of these figures. Very expressive, wise face. The figure measures 4 1/2 inches (11.4cm) tall, somewhat larger than the peacock blue miniatures but not as large as the very common bird figures. C1900, late Qing dynasty. Unusual!
