A large, delicately modeled Abhaya Mudra Buddha, in the pose of fearlessness, after famous artists in China such as He Chaozong and Su Xuejin. It bears the square and gourd seal that these artists used, although it is an apocryphal mark used by the best kilns that made the finest works, as both of these artist are from earlier years, Ming and Qing dynasties. This vintage 20th century example is of the finest quality, with incredible detailing, and is of the type of firing of the Blanc de Chine clays that produces a rose pink color. The color depends on the amount of iron oxide that is present in the kiln atmosphere when firing. The rose tint is very unique, but not at all unknown for these figures. This is a large Buddha at 11 and 1/2 inches tall, even taller on the solid wood hand rubbed stand. See the pictures for the incredible detailing and folds of the robes. The mystic mark on the Buddha's chest was used as a symbol of divinity and spirituality in India for many centuries, and in Sanskrit the symbol means auspiciousness. Very impressive, unusual, and beautiful Buddha, in perfect condition.
