An excellent jadeite Buddha pendant, well and deeply carved, suspended from a black and gold macramé type cord that is adjustable from 18 inches to 24 inches so it can be lengthened, placed over the head and then easily set to a suitable neckline. The jadeite portion measures 47mm in diameter and is 15mm thick, and weighs 66.5 grams. It's a good sized chunky piece of jade! The coloration is a mottled celedon green with small inclusions of apple green; we've tried to take pictures in different lighting to show off this outstanding piece. An excellent and beautiful pendant necklace!
About jade: Chinese craftsmen have been making precious objects and tools from jade for thousands of years years. Chinese craftsmen recognized centuries ago that certain jades were harder, denser, more easily worked, and produced a higher luster when polished. This type of jade, officially known today as jadeite, became the jade most revered by Chinese artisans, especially in translucent emerald green, also known as imperial jade. Some other types of jades beloved by the Chinese are lavender jadeite, and white or muttonfat nephrite, among others. In fact, royalty the world over have loved jade and recognized its special qualities. Only nephrite and jadeite are truly jade, but many stones can imitate jade coloration, so care must be taken by the consumer when purchasing. Jade is believed to be a spiritual stone, with healing properties, and is sometimes referred to as the "stone of heaven". At Tradewinds Antiques, we only refer to jadeite and nephrite as jade.
