These German grinders were purposed for grinding hard foods, like cheese, chocolate, nuts, and the like. The ground or grated them in a medium grain size so they could be used in baking and flavoring. I've seen them referred to as chocolate grinders and coffee grinders, but I think coffee beans would be too hard and the interior looks very much like a medium fine grater. This one seems functional and has very pleasing wear, and best of all has the original wooden feeder block on top - few examples have retained this. Can be taken apart for cleaning. Circa 1900-1930. Marked Fripu No. 211 Germany. Super neat, see how we have attached it with it's handy screw to a hutch - and it looks fantastic! Measures long, it's good sized.
