An artist signed folk art box depicting a weather worn country gentleman. Based on the ribboned, bowl shaped hat, we estimate mid to late 19th century. Hand cutting is evidenced on the wood, as well as lap joints where the sides come together. Quality workmanship and very expressive carving, even if a bit rustic. Wonderful patina. What we did: by necessity we had to rework the hinges. We provided a better bevel and brass wood screws which we think would have followed the original. The hinges themselves are the original brass fold over type. That's it, everything else is just as it was. Unusual in that it opens from the opposite edge that you would think, but we believe that is so you can display the top carving. Measures 6 and 3/4 inches square (9.3 X 9.3cm) and 2 /12 inches (6.4cm) tall, approximately. Very cool display piece.
