This lovely little Hotei Buddha has a wonderful patina and is full of cheerful character. He measures 7 1/4 inches tall on the wooden stand. His gilding has worn away in places due to age but otherwise he is in fine shape. The Hotei is a representation of a Zen monk from the 6th century who wondered from village to village, spreading cheer and was said to also be able to foretell the future, particularly weather. He was said to be an entertaining story teller, and well beloved by children. Today he is regarded universally as lucky, and his figure is often seen in places of business to foster prosperity. Circa 1900.
