A well kept, larger pair of yellow based antique wucai bug eyed Foo Dogs! These were made at the end of the Qing dynasty, circa 1900. Foo Dogs are really lions, or shishi (stone lions), that originally guarded temples, palaces and important homes. They are male and female; the male with his paw on the world, and the female with her paw on a pup. The female is yin in spirit, nurturing and protective of a home's occupants, while the male is yang in spirit, protecting the dwelling itself. Properly displayed, Foo Dogs are together, with the female on the left and the male on the right. However, since they were often located at doorways and thresholds, they are often displayed apart on mantles and bookcases. A matched pair is preferred, and increases the value dramatically, and is the only way we offer them at Tradewinds! 9.5 inches tall, no damage. Excellent!
