Typical these heavily glazed roof type ornaments were part of temples or important government buildings. There are many styles of these roof tile ornaments, in red mud clay (as this one is) and stoneware. Wucai refers to five colors; it is mostly three colors of glaze but a cobalt and black appear because of the mix of glazes, firing temperatures, etc. This is a temple guardian Foo Dog, and might be found on corners and entry ways. He is in great shape with minor crazing but no damage. Of course, these were mass produced and heavily glazed so they are not meant to be fine interior wares, but are built to withstand the elements and last forever! And therein lies the charm; they are rustic and artistic in their own right as no two are ever quite alike. Circa 1900. Measures 9 and 1/2 inches tall. Cool - and protects from evil spirits!
