This finely carved cinnabar lacquer vase is in truly excellent condition. It features two different intricately carved scenes of scholars and students among foliage and rockery. It is crafted over a copper or brass shell, and the interior is finished in black lacquer, as well as the bottom. It is marked simply CHINA on the bottom, meaning that is was likely made for export. We date this vase to approximately very late 19th century to very early 20th century, circa 1880 to 1920. It has no damage to speak of, other than tiny frits at the mouth and base, which are of no consequence. Remarkable quality, one of the last that would have been made of real cinnabar in old China. Measures about 10 inches (25.4cm) tall, a good sized vase.
