An antique Chinese snuff bottle of the Japanese craft genre, that includes lacquer, cloisonne, mother of pearl and cinnabar executed in Japanese craft houses of very high skill and workmanship. Completely made of mother of pearl shell! These works were favored during the later 19th century and early republic period, to satisfy collectors and souvenir shops in China, where foreigners made regular visits for trade. Most of these that I have found and collected would be dated about 1880-1920. Instability, and Japanese control of parts of China stopped imports and production of such goods by the 1930s. This is an earlier piece of extraordinary quality and workmanship, featuring Qwan Yin on one side with a precious object fan and the reverse with foliage. Measures 7.5 cm (2.9 inches) tall. The piece is in excellent condition with no damages, complete and beautiful!
