A well carved snuff bottle our of shoushan stone, a type of stone that is similar in nature to soapstone, but slightly harder. The stone is also known as agalmatolite and is mined in the Shoushan village in northern Fujian province. It comes in many different colors from black to deep red. This old bottle was found without a top, we fashioned a new top for it of dyed coral and brass. The top would be similar to the type it might have originally had. The bottle itself dates to the late 19th to earlier twentieth century, about 1880 to 1920, or late Qing dynasty to early republic period. The interior is well hollowed. It is cleverly carved picking out the black outer skin of the stone to depict a wandering Hotei. The bottle measures 2.44 inches or 6.2cm tall to the stopper top. A different addition for your collection!
