I'm certain this very cool porcelain bottle started life as a tonic or medicine bottle. However, in its later life it was used as a snuff bottle because it has a hardstone top and carved spoon. This is not uncommon, but what is special about this bottle is the quality of the underglaze blue artwork. Clearly, a tiger's appearance was not completely familiar to the artist, as the very detailed but childlike rendering suggests. But, that's also what gives us an indication of age; we're confident this bottle is well over 100 years old. Notice the remnants of the Jian Ding seal on the bottom of the bottle, allowing it to be exported from China. Not a guarantee of anything but suggests it was acquired originally from a Chinese Antiques market. Really neat, and part of my personal collection for many years. It's a larger bottle measuring 3 5/8 inches (9.2cm) tall, with no damage or issues to report.
