This snuff bottle looks very much like muttonfat white nephrite jade but is in fact serpentine. Serpentine is softer than jade, but can be found in many of the same colors. The color is slightly off white, with some mottling or variations, and it is extremely well hollowed with a raised footrim and concave mouth. The top is rose quartz with a hardwood collar. This antique snuff bottle may have been carved as an imitation, a favorite game of the Chinese, not to defraud but as a way to show the artist's skill. Imitations have been made through the centuries of many materials! Condition: excellent, expected wear to surfaces where handled, no chips, cracks or damage. C1800-1900. Pleasing to the touch and to the eye! Measures 5.6 cm tall without stopper, with stopper 6.7 cm (2.6 inches) tall.
