This is a very rare antique glass set by Boston and Sandwich, circa 1870. We believe it is Boston and Sandwich, but Stevens and Williams and some other European producers did this treatment as well - and even had a similar twist pattern mold. This treatment takes a lot of time and patience to make, and there are a lot of losses when making it, so we don't find very many. First two batches of glass are gathered in clear and cranberry. The piece is blown in to the basic shape, then sprayed with water which makes it crack, then reheated to anneal the cracks, then rolled in crushed glass, then heated again to make the crushed glass partially melt to take out the sharpness. Finally it is finely shaped and a handle applied. Goodness, what a lot of work, but, it's very beautiful when completed. This is a milk pitcher, 6 3/4 inches high, and five good tumblers. The pitcher has a smooth, completely polished pontil. I was recently at the largest antique show in the Atlanta area, and just one overshot tumbler was 50 dollars, due to the rarity of this glass style. Here's a whole set, and we've priced it fairly. Condition: ash and imperfections, bubbles, etc found in old glass. We've taken ample pictures, please view. There is no damage to the pitcher, and the applied, reeded handle is solid with no stress cracking at the body as is so often the case. The reeding is more course (fewer reeds) as it should be for genuine antique glass (reproductions have very fine reeds). To my knowledge, no has ever attempted to reproduce overshot plus crackle pieces. The tumblers are as perfect as cut top tumblers get, one has a spot on the lip that is rough, probably in the making. What a great set! Gorgeous.
