For your consideration is a pair of Emanuel Sweert 17th Century hand colored botanical copper plate engravings. Sweert (1552 – 1612) was a Dutch painter and nurseryman. He published Forilegium Amplissimum et Selectissimum in 1612 (Frankfurt) while he was head of the gardens of Vienna under Emperor Rudolf II. Six editions were published between 1612 and 1647.
This pair of plates (numbers 26 and 57) has been produced on early rag type paper of the era and hand colored. The image area measures approximately 8 x 13 inches and have been expertly framed. They originally sold at The Summerhouse, a high end retailer that was located at 319 Worth Ave, Palm Beach Florida (The Rodeo Drive of Palm Beach). Although I was not able to determine when The Summerhouse was in business, the pair originally sold for $650 each.
