For your consideration is a period c1870 Victorian hand-made 20K gold Etruscan Revival necklace (145 years old) just acquired from a Southern estate and has not seen the light of day for decades. This necklace is of the highest quality craftsmanship with twisted wire wrapping, gold beading, and flowers on each medallion. The necklace is strung on the original gold mesh chain and also retains the original old patina which is extremely rare to see. You can just imagine the statement made when worn at a Victorian Ball together with a ruffled hoop gown. This necklace exemplifies refinement and beauty in a stately manner.
The necklace is 34.6 cm long and weighs 65.6 grams. The medallions are 25 mm and 23 mm in length, and 3 mm deep. Three inside medallion ornaments are lacking in the clasp area at the back of the necklace. The necklace is unmarked and has tested 20K Gold in multiple locations by a Thermo Niton XL3t 900S x-ray fluorescence (XRF) unit: Consistently 85% – 87% Au (20K). Over the past 20 years, two period necklaces, not as detailed and both polished, have come up at major auctions, both selling in the five-figures. Antiques Roadshow appraised a Boucheron necklace at $20K – $30K in 2007, and Russie Jewelers in NYC has a period Etruscan Revival necklace for sale now at $48K.
Under high magnification, there are no signs of scratches or marks on the medallions associated with prior polishing or cleaning. And yes, gold does acquire tarnish or patina. According to Gloria Lieberman (PBS; Antiques Roadshow), the patina is the result of being stored with other metals in a closed area for an extended period of time.
Attributed to Castellani or Frederic Boucheron
