14K-16K yellow gold (acid & electronic tested) medal of the Virgin Mary, ca.1940-50's. Made of two thick plates of gold sandwiched over what appears to be a thin layer of gutta percha. Measures 1.12" wide by 1.57" long including the fixed bail. Due to long term wear, the bails have been given some extra metal. The weight is 7gms. The thickest raised part of the figure's relief is 2.79mm. The reverse is plain and shows up quite dark due to its shiny overexposure. Probably Italian per the family's lore. Excellent condition with only typical age related wear.
