I have sold hundreds of needlework samplers over the years. I would estimate that 98% of them that I see are 19th century (1800s) work. Occasionally, I will see an 18th (1700s) piece. Extremely rare would be an 17th century (1600s) sampler. That is what we have here; a rare 17th century sampler by Mary Coleston and dated 1687. Piece is in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colors are greens, blues and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case letters. Inscription reads 'REmemBeR noW Thy cReaToR in THE Days s oF Thy yovTH WH Ile The EviL Dayes come noT noR THE yeRs DRaW niGH When Thov sHaLT say I Have no PLeasvR in THEM DREAm noT o Vain man iT WiLL sERvE Thy TvRn vPon Thy DEATH BED FOR Thy SInS To MovRn BvT THInK HoW mAny HATH Been snATCH Way AnD HAVE noT HAD TImE FOR meRcy once To pRAy ItsIvs? A number of small holes and two repairs. Approximate sized framed 27 x 12.5 inches. A rare opportunity to own a 16th century sampler. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
