William Joseph Shayer (British, 1788 - 1879) was a self-taught artist who began his career as a furniture and carriage decorator in the town of Guildford. Ultimately, he began painting landscapes, country folk, and beach scenes with boats and fisherman, having substantial success. Living mainly in the south of England, Shayer's paintings mostly reflect this region and its people. Often collaborating with other artists, Shayer is known to have worked with Edward Charles Williams as well as with his oldest son, William Joseph Shayer, Junior. Exhibiting at the Royal Academy and the British Museum on multiple occasions during his lifetime, the elder Shayer is a highly respected artist whose works are on display at many museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Glasgow Art Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This painting is noteworthy for its composition, vibrant palette, desirable subject matter, and important size.
