Antique 17" Portrait Jumeau French doll, circa 1877, known as First Series Portrait, or Almond-Eyes.
Marked 1 very low on the neck, ( you have to pull gently the head out of its socket to see it ) this doll has a fabulous bisque, very thin and translucent, known in France as coquille d'oeuf ( eggshell).
Perfect pressed bisque socket head, large brown glass inset eyes, dark eyeliner encircling the eyecuts, pierced ears, delicate blushing and painting of the features, original cork pate.
The doll is on her original body, eight-ball all wooden jointed body with straight wrists, which is a very rare one. I have this fact from Francois Theimer to whom I showed pictures of the naked doll. I did not attempt to clean the body.
The doll was sold as a Premiere Jumeau although the auction house noted her enchanting Portrait expression. She wore a brown wig and antique costume, undergarments, socks and shoes. The last picture illustrates this.
This is a truly remarkable doll, a very rare early bebe with a choicest pressed bisque head, an original all wooden rare body, slightly uneven eyecuts ( the mark of all early Portraits), and huge brown eyes with an inquisitive Portrait expression. Her condition is excellent. Advanced doll collectors this one is for you,, do not miss her.
Please look at the pictures under magnification for details of condition. Please note the beauty spot on the temple and the line across one earlobe.
