Victorian Two Tone Portrait Brooch Gold Filled Sweet portrait brooch features a young boy seated. His photo is bezel set and has the original celluloid clear cover over it. Frame is ornate openwork with a floral scroll design. I believe the flowers to be forget- me-nots.
Closed back has pin and "c" clasp. Marked W & H co on the back, which stands for Whitman & Hough Company in Providence, Rhode Island. W & H co began in 1856. Mr. Whitman passed on sometime around 1890. The Hough family took over the business until the early 1920's.
It is possible that this is a mourning brooch. Oval bezel setting, including its back is either plated or filled with rose gold. It has a soft rosy color to it. The ornate frame is plated in yellow gold.
Condition is very good. On the front the gold filled frame including the bezel setting is bright and lovely. There is only the slightest bit of oxidation on the back within the scrollwork of the frame. Measures 1-1/2" x 1-1/4". The young boy is quite striking in appearance – very cute.
