Sterling Silver Blue Lapis Dangling Thunderbird Brooch by Benjamin James
Handcrafted and signed by Native American Navajo Benjamin James. Features a horizontal bar having round lapis cabochons set within raised saw tooth edged bezels. Between each stone is a raised solid sterling concho. Dangling from the bar in the center is a Thunderbird with a lapis center. Hanging down on either side of the Thunderbird are two ears of corn, or maize.
The Thunderbird is a legendary bird of power and strength, thought to bring thunder from flapping its wings. Legend has it that it is a symbol of protection. One never wants to incur the anger of the Thunderbird. The corn is the symbol of life. The pollen from the corn is used as a blessing for protection, forgiveness and understanding.
Backs of bar and bird both are signed BJ (for Benjamin James) STERLING. Bar is 2-3/8” across and 3/8” in width. Total length is 1-1/2”. Condition is very good. My photos don’t really pick up the shine of the silver too much. It gleams softly and has a wonderful patina.
