Magnificent brooch has much Victorian symbolism. It features a fabulously colored large piece of amethyst glass that so looks like a huge chaton. I was informed that the oak and ivy leaves, and what I believe to be poppy flowers, along with the amethyst, would have made it a touching and significant gift to a close friend coming out of mourning. Interestingly, the stone, when held up to the light shows you a crazy, kaleidoscope view. There are also variations in color and density you don't generally see in glass,
This stone is so firmly encased within its setting that it will never come free. The openwork foliate elements gradually rise upwards from the edge of the brooch until they rest and lay on top, covering and encompassing one third of the stone in either direction. You will never have to worry about losing the stone. Stone measures about 1” in diameter. Brooch has rise of half an inch.
Workmanship, material and design are of outstanding quality. I can guarantee that heads will turn to admire this lovely piece.
“C” clasp, hinge and pin are in beautiful working condition.
Brooch measures just over 2-7/8” x 2”.
Brooch appears to be brass with some gold plating at least on the front. My photos could not pick up the way that the smooth polished edges of detailing contrast to the deeply textured finish. In person this will absolutely amaze you.
