Great vintage box with hinged lid features a group of folks gathered at a table. From the looks of it they really believe that wine women and song make for a good time. A fiddler is playing for them and you can tell they are truly enjoying themselves. Near the fiddler's feet is a little dog. In the background you can see part of a house, some trees and scenery.
All sides of the box are done in very deep and heavy repousse. Front and back have designs of flowers, curvy leaves and swirls. Sides have some lovely leaves and swirls also done in relief.
Box is supported by four sturdy feet having etched vertical bars.
Bottom of box has nice machine tooled spiral or circular designs throughout. Bottom is impressed PRIMANS. This mark may be either PRIMA NS (nickel silver) or PRIMANS. I'm not quite sure but it is a beautiful box. Box bottom was put in place rather than being formed with the rest of the box. The rest of the box is heavy and very thick. Box is also Silverplated. I had it tested for silver-plate on some areas.
This is one solid heavy box. It weighs 3 lbs. with the major component being metal. The cedar wood lining is in wonderful condition. The metal has a lovely patina and is in great condition.
The wood lining the box is off kilter a bit on the left side. It is not flush with the side, but rather leans in a wee bit towards the top. However it is quite sturdy. This appears to have been done when the lining was put inside the box. I see absolutely no signs of repair.
Due to the cedar lining and size, I believe this box was meant to hold cigars or cigarettes.
Box measures 6.5"L x 5"W x 2.25"H
