This antique Chinese wood carving of a man wrestling with a foo dog under a flowering tree is quite small and may have originally been part of a door or cabinet. The carving is just 6.25 by 6.5 inches and .875 inches deep. The fascinating piece is dark colored with traces of red lacquer and of gilt on the figures and raised lip. It is weathered and showing its age with a one inch gouge out of the lip and wear to the underlying wood on the man’s belly and the rear of the Imperial guardian lion as can be seen in the photos. These flaws are a testament to age and do not take away from the appeal of this 19th century Asian carving.
