This vintage pottery match holder is a souvenir of the English seaside town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The holder has a handpainted marine scene of a manned sailboat on calm seas with the motto "A match for any man" and "Ryde" incised in the cream colored background. The holder stands 2.875 inches high with a diameter of 3.5 inches at the base and a top opening of just over an inch. The domed base is patterned to provide the match striking surface. The underside is marked with the maker's name that is difficult to read but possibly Watcombe, with Torquay and the numbers 153. The holder is in excellent condition with a small paint flake on the rim that could have been a production flaw and does not detract.
