This vintage Torquay pottery pitcher has the Scandy pattern on one side and a motto on the other. The scandy pattern, with open seed or flower head and stylized leaves or flower within, is hand painted in shades of blue, green and brown on a cream colored background. The motto on the other side, reads: "Do the work thats nearest Tho' tis dull at whiles Helping when you meet them Lame dogs over stiles".
The handled jug is a bit over 5.25 inches high and about the same across the widest point to the outside of the handle. It is incised Watcombe Torquay on the underside with what looks like NI and 154.
The pitcher is in excellent condition with light crazing from age and a few production flaws typical of Torquay pottery that are part of its appealing charm and do not detract.
