For your consideration is a beautiful jet black rectangular shaped Bakelite pendant. The pendant is about 2.5 inches tall and 2 inches wide. The four corners of the pendant are deeply carved as much of the Bakelite was when it was originally popular. The pendant is c1930. The centered cameo features a sweet lovely detailed woman in Edwardian costume. Her hair is curly and she wears earrings and a necklace. Often you will see these cameos centering different styles of early Bakelite designs. I like to be as correct as possible when selling vintage pieces, so I always try to do a lot of beforehand research. I found that the cameos are often stated to be Bakelite when, in fact, the majority of them are of a different early plastic, most likely a celluloid. Celluloid has a different feel, and Bakelite is not usually found with this type of minute detailed carving. The oval center that the cameo is mounted on can be found in Bakelite, celluloid, or lucite depending on the particular design.
To be clear on what I am selling, this piece did test as genuine bakelite with a plastic cameo in the center. It is in excellent condition, with very minimal surface scratching on the back. The pendant has a hole in the top for chain insertion. Unfortunately, the original chain does not come with this pendant as it most likely got separated in its travels over the years. The chain is usually a linked celluloid chain. You should be able to find one on many vintage jewelry sites, or you can be creative and use another type of chain that is appealing to you. Bakelite is always beautiful and unique regardless.
