This is a Wonderful late 19thC to early 20thC Antique Miniature Child Church Rag Cloth Doll dressed as a man measuring 9 1/2" tall. Miniature cloth dolls are more like folk art and tell a story of loving hands carefully holding and playing with the doll. Always far from perfect, the early cloth dolls, and miniature ones, are for the collector who fully appreciates the less than perfect nature of the dolls. And the story they are want to tell. Some were made by the child herself. Small miniature size cloth dolls like this one were made by mother or child so that the little girl (or boy) could have something in his or her hands to help pass the time during long church services. This little cutie is only 9 1/2" INCHES tall and is in miniature. This is a rolled doll not a stuffed doll (not stuffed with cotton but made by rolling fabric up and stitching the seam together) and the arms are rolled and stitched to the back. The legs are rolled as well. The rolled head and torso are covered and the fabric is stiched together at the top of the head. The facial features include watercolor eyes which are penciled in first with faint penciled eyebrows, nose and mouth. The wool clothing was made by a child and stitched to the body and include striped wool trousers, wool vest with cotton shirt and silk tie. You do not often find male dolls. Perhaps this was made for a boy. There are some stains and soiling appropriate for the age of the doll. Wonderful doll. As a reminder, this doll is 9 1/2" tall only and fits in the palm of your hand as it would have for a child. I love miniature cloth church dolls and this one is from my collection.
