Antique Alice Hairdo China Head Doll with Snood Diadem Brushstrokes First Prize 21 Inch Pre Civil War
This is an Antique Alice Hairdo China Head Doll with Snood Diadem Brushstrokes First Prize 21 Inch Pre Civil War. The doll comes in a clean and beautiful fully lined paisley print silk two piece gown made by Dollie Westerhelweg as indicated on the Fashion label. She also won a First Prize/Antiques at the Ohio State fair, Columbus Ohio in 1973. The entry tag states “ 21 inch China- Meissen (note snood and brush hair marks). Head is marked #76” (with a drawing of the Meissen blue crossed swords) “in blue inside the shoulder (to see mark, unfasten blouse in back, untie strings attached to head in front, and lift head back)”. Another tag included with her reads “420 H/ 22 inch fancy hairdo china, brush mks blackband, snood, old cl. body mkd #5, china arms; Meissen (the word Meissen is crossed out) mk in-side head; discoloration on forehead, wear back of head tip of nose, crack below front sew hole”. The clean doll is also wearing her two original white cotton tucked lace trimmed elaborate petticoats (one is flannel), and original lace chemise bodice and long pantaloons trimmed with lace and tucking. I have not untied any strings to see her marks, but she does have #5 to her back just under the shoulder plate. Her china arms may be original, but the top part of her arms have been replaced (possibly 35-40 years ago??). The front center sew hole has a 2 inch tight hairline associated with it. There are old sewn patches to the top of her torso. Her lower legs have repairs and a little sawdust leakage to the left leg. One repair is old cellophane tape. It is difficult to remove her pantaloons (and should not be) as they are snug on her legs and removing may cause leakage to the lower leg or to the old fabric. There are no chips to the china head or shoulder plate. The molded headband or diadem has wear to the gold paint. Please note the brush lines to her forehead and the molded snood (some paint wear). Her serene face has painted blue eyes, eyelid lines, eyebrows, eye dots, nose dots, blushed cheeks, and coral colored cupid’s bow parted lips.
