This is an Old Shaker Community Sewing Scissors Rest Hand Stitched Embroidered Pin Cushion Needlework Tool. Made by the Shakers. The United Society of Believers were a primarily 19th century religious society that became known as "the Shakers" because of the trembling and shaking of the members during prayer. Among other things, they produced many many sewing items to be sold to the outside world. Most people believe that these Shaker cushions were for needles and pins as this former owner did, but actually they were meant to rest your scissors on for ease of use. This scissors rest is all hand-sewn and embroidered and made of woven wool tape. It measures 4-3/4 inches long. These Shaker sewing items are getting really hard to find.
