This is an Old Shaker Sewing Needle Case Bronzed Leather Mauve Silk Lining with Needle Packets. The United Society of Believers were a primarily 19th century religious society that became known as "the Shakers" because of the trembling and shaking of the members during prayer. Among other things, they produced many many sewing items to be sold to the outside world. Among them were sewing boxes and cases like this one. This needlework sewing case is made of bronzed leather (wear at the case folds and binding) with an unusual mauve silk lining. The lining shows much wear and disintegration. The embroidered wool pages for the needles are fine, and there are four sections for needles. It measures (when opened) 8 inches long and 4 inches wide.
