This is an Antique 19thC Folk Art Crib Quilt Variable Star Blue Calico All Handsewn Quilted. Indigo blue calico quilts are one of my favorites, and this one is no exception. Many blue and pink calico cotton prints have been used to make the variable star patchwork patterns. This is a crib quilt and it measures 40 inches long and about 30 inches wide. It is all hand stitched and hand quilted. The backing is a brown calico print. There is some deterioration to the pink calico in one place on the border due to the calico fabric that was used. There is another 1-inch long rough spot to the binding. All the blue calico fabric is in excellent condition. The variable star blocks measure 4 inches square with 1-inch latice strips. The border is 2 inches wide. Due to the fact that the backing is a brown calico fabric, there is deterioration all over here and there but the quilting keeps the fabric in its place. The batting is a thin cotton batt. Please note that one corner block was done in a brown stripe fabric and is not a repair. The central star block has a very pale calico print that looks white but it is a pink print (there is some aging to that fabric). There are no repairs to this quilt and no rips, tears, or holes. The graphics and contrast makes this quilt superb. This is a quilt for a collector who wants to add a fabulous crib quilt to their collection and who appreciates and wants to preserve early textiles of our American cultural history.
